Cricket and grasshopper

Crickets and grasshoppers are distributed throughout almost the entire territory of our country. Each rural and even urban resident in the warm season has heard the fascinating chirping of these individuals more than once. Many even mistakenly believe that this is the same insect. In fact, there are more than enough parameters than the cricket differs from the grasshopper.

External features

Both insects are members of the order Orthoptera, each has its own family: cricket and grasshopper. Those who had the opportunity to see both nearby, will be able to note that the difference is obvious:

  • Grasshoppers have a greenish color, very thin and long hind legs.In cricket color more squat, brown, something like cockroaches. The back pair of legs is less developed.
  • The apparent difference in representatives of orthopteran and in size. The body length of green orthoptera is about 2.8-3.9 cm, and crickets do not grow more than 30 mm.
  • There are differences between grasshopper and cricket in the breeding mechanism. Both species equally entice the female. To do this, insects begin to chatter. The louder and more active the sound, the greater the chance of pairing. But the grasshopper female has a more modernized organ for laying eggs. He helps her to safely hide offspring from enemies. A female cricket has a needle-like ovipositor, through which she lays offspring in plants.

On a note!

On a closer look, photos can be noted the difference in the ways of laying the wings. Grasshoppers in the process of folding push one wing to the other, forming the shape of the house. Cricket covers the left wing of the right horizontally.

Taste preferences

The differences between the grasshopper and the firefly have also affected the way of feeding. Grasshoppers are predators in their nature and choose other insects as food. The representative of the orthopteran waits until the victim loses his guard and grabs his powerful forepaws. Developed oral apparatus allows you to cope with even larger specimens. Individuals do not disdain their own representatives, which are smaller and weaker. They can switch to plant food only in cases of elimination, if there are no insects nearby.

Crickets are more willing to eat plant food. They drink the juice of the plant, thereby leading them to death. When spreading a large population near the dacha, serious damage to plantings can be caused, since individuals prefer dry weeds to juicy seedlings. If they live in a human home, the way of eating house crickets will resemble cockroaches. Fireflies with pleasure will begin to absorb the remnants of human food.

Thus, based on these differences, it can be concluded that these insects are at least close relatives in the order, but have significant differences that make each representatives individual.
